What Does Earl Hindman Play In

"black rain" by Shohei Imamura, and "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" by Ken Loach, IN FILM ARCHIVE

I comment this month on Film Archive a couple of new DVDs that are consistent with many other famous films: Black Rain (Kuroi ame, 1989), the extraordinary film by Shohei Imamura, based on non- Masuji less masterful novel Ibusa, and The Wind That Shakes the Barley (The Wind That Shakes the Barley, 2006), which for once and without a precedent, I think one of the most interesting titles irregular Ken Loach .

Black Rain is justly famous for its reconstruction of the nuclear attack on Hiroshima: " sequences that take place in Hiroshima are in many ways exemplary. The brilliance of black and white photography gives them a key "hellish", perfect for the intentions of the story that at times suggests the engravings of Gustave Dore, which gives them a nightmarish hue which makes them the most convincing visualization of the immediate consequences of a nuclear holocaust have been seen to date on a movie screen. But ultimately, despite the undeniable strength of the scenes of Hiroshima, which ultimately is just dominate the lyrical tone that take place in the village, where Imamura redisplays with most brilliant results, its usual parallel between human and animal behavior, with superb results, even higher than those of his version of "The Ballad of Narayama" (1983) . "

As The Wind That Shakes the Barley , "answered Loach as usual to prepare the narrative framework of his fiction, but here everything is better and more thoughtful dosed than usual and, miraculously, in addition well planned and shot, just wiping qualities which, to date, was the most devastating feature of his cinema, his demagoguery. That may be because, on this occasion, screenwriter Paul Laverty also seems more toned than usual, perhaps because it was hard to do worse than "Carla's Song" (1996), "My name is Joe" (1998), "Bread and Roses" (2000) and "Just a Kiss" (2004) These last two particularly unbearable.
